Academics enriched by the richness of literature.
Books I've Been Reading
One could imagine the abundance of assorted literature that I am overcome with in the fall of my senior semester. Through this process, I have been able to distinguish the works that are fully enriching for my mind from those that, in my view, fall short. I have been given a valuable opportunity to pursue and deepen my education while exploring subjects I might not have ventured into on my own.
I would like to list a few of my favorite works that hold particular significance for me from this semester. The works I have chosen have each, in their own way, either challenged my perspective, deepened my already existing understanding, or provided a relaxing escape from the constant pull of my phone or academic stress.
The Lais of Marie de France
In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez
The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien
Erec and Enide, Chrétien de Troyes
The Awakening, Kate Chopin
Trifles, Susan Glaspell
Freedom School Poetry (1964)
Pearl, Anonymous (The Gawain Poet: Complete Works, Marie Borroff)
Paradise, Toni Morrison
I highly recommend any and all of these amazing works, as each has reshaped the way I think and influenced my understanding of myself and how I fit in the world. With the works that I have mentioned above, I found myself inspired to continue writing my own works and poems, ones in which I may share in these same journals one day.
I am excitedly looking forward to winter break and the opportunity to dive into more books in my free time, beyond the classroom setting. If there are any books you’ve read that piqued your interest, I would love to hear about them! I’m always eager for new recommendations to further expand my exploration.
